Do you need to test your safety switch?

Category: Latest News

Yes. A safety switch, also known as a Residual Current Device (RCD), is an important piece of equipment in your switchboard that helps prevent you and your family from being electrocuted in your home by faulty wiring, switches or electrical appliances.

How often should you test your safety switch?
We recommend that you test your switch every 3 months to ensure its operating correctly.

How do you test it?
It's a simple two-step process:

  1. Press the TEST button. This should automatically trip the switch to the OFF position.
  2. Reset the switch by pushing the switch back to the ON position.

What do I do if my safety switch fails the test?
If your safety switch won't stay on, you need to call an electrician. Without a functioning safety switch then you and your family are not protected from being electrocuted by an electrical fault that occurs in your home.
